Programs How we do what we do

LOPE helps racehorses find opportunities for new jobs after racing via our adoption ranch, academy program, injury rehabilitation, online services, and horsemanship education work.

Adoption Ranch

Racehorses are donated to LOPE directly from the racing industry. At our adoption ranch, we assess each horse to determine its needs and then direct the horse into either our rehabilitation or academy program. When they have healed and/or completed their foundation training, they are available for adoption into new homes.

The LOPE Academy

The LOPE Academy operates like a school program. For each “semester,” some LOPE horses are selected to go through foundation work at our facilities. We assess each horse for their needs, talents and capabilities. LOPE then customizes a learning plan for each horse to help them build a strong foundation for their futures (in whatever discipline that may be). During the semester, the LOPE Academy horses are taught for the entire duration without interruption. They are not available for adoption until they have completed the program — but LOPE actively shares the details of their progress through blogging, videos and Facebook.

Rehabilitation

Some racehorses arrive at LOPE with sports injuries from their track careers. At our ranch, they receive the rehabilitation, turnout and rest they need to recover fully. Once their injuries heal, LOPE begins the process of restarting them back under saddle. Thanks to our veterinary sponsor, Austin Equine Hospital, LOPE can provide top-notch care to the horses in rehab at our ranch.

Online Services

LOPE can’t take in all of the racehorses in need of new homes. To help race trainers and owners place their horses to non-racing equestrians, LOPE has an active social media presence on Facebook to assist in online networking for the racehorses still owned by the industry. Additionally, LOPE has an urgent email bulletin service for the horses in need of immediate placement.

Horsemanship Education

By sharing what we learn about horsemanship, LOPE hopes to encourage more equestrians to adopt, own, and retrain ex-racehorses. We provide reports about each horse’s progress in our Academy Program, promote quality horsemanship events in the area, and share detailed vet records on the LOPE rehab horses. LOPE also offers individual lessons and group workshops, and sponsors horsemanship awards at horse shows. LOPE has also produced a horsemanship DVD and written extensively about the horsemanship journey in Beyond the Homestretch. Finally, LOPE encourages participation in quality clinics by our adopted horses via adoption fee rebates.
