Shadow Warrior had a big experience! A little over a week ago (during all the rain and mud), he was agitated at breakfast. He was showing signs of a mild colic (didn't want to eat his morning alfalfa) plus was sore on his left front. Our incredible vets at Austin Equine Hospital came out to assess him -- and quickly decided it would be best to have him come to the clinic. Shadow handled the field exam and the trip to the clinic calmly. He then stayed at the clinic for several days, so that they could supervise his abscess treatment in dry conditions. As we've posted before, Shadow has had some trust issues due to his difficult experiences in Puerto Rico (he survived the hurricanes there last year). Over the past few months, he has made some steady changes here. But his usual handler (me) was out of town. So we weren't sure how he would respond to new handlers plus a stay at the clinic. We are happy to report that Shadow took the whole experience in stride! He trailered well, cooperated with vet treatment and maintained good manners during his stall rest. Shadow is a good reminder that small, steady changes will eventually create key turning points -- it just takes time and patience. Huge thanks to Austin Equine Hospital for their dedicated care of Shadow! And equally big thanks to J.d. Badertscher for helping Shadow and LOPE while I was out of town! ... See MoreSee Less
