Shadow Warrior is a regally bred, courageous racing warrior who became a personal hero to me (and many others). I’ve never seen a horse fight such difficult battles yet still emerge victorious.
Shadow came to LOPE from Puerto Rico, after hurricane Maria devastated the island. But Shadow’s biggest battle came after he arrived at LOPE. We’ve never told his full story before because of its intensity and uncertain outcome. As the year draws to a close, we felt it was time to share Shadow’s entire journey.
Many would say that a horse like Shadow isn’t worth saving. It takes too much time, effort and money — all for a horse who will never be commercially valuable. But to us, Shadow’s story demonstrates on every level why these warhorses matter — and how much they have to give the world as teachers. In that respect, they truly are worth their weight in gold.

These valiant warhorses are extra deserving yet often overlooked. And they are so valuable as teachers for future industry leaders in the veterinary and training fields. LOPE is committed to giving these horses the best possible chance to fulfill their purpose in the world.
Without LOPE, warhorses like Shadow would never have a chance. But it requires much time, effort and funding to effectively help them. For LOPE, it is an honor and privilege to work with these horses, to help them fulfill their purpose in the world. We can provide all the time and effort (we are devoted to that mission). The horses provide all the heart and try (for that is the way of the warhorse).
We need your help for the funding part.
LOPE has launched the Save More Shadows campaign to expand our work and help ten more horses like Shadow in 2019. To do that, we must raise $20,000 by December 31.
There are deserving warhorses already on our waiting list — but they are running out of time. They must start their rehab/recovery programs as soon as possible — before their health conditions (and hopes for a good future) fade away.
With your gift to our campaign, you can save more Shadows from disappearing — and help them bring the light of education to so many young people. Shadow alone has taught seventeen people in just one year at LOPE! What a gift he has been.
Thank you for caring about the future of these magnificent animals — and for being inspired by them as we are at LOPE. Shadow and all the LOPE horses wish you a warm and happy holiday season!
