FAQ Frequently Asked Questions

LOPE only works with racehorses still active/owned in the racing industry. We take in all breeds of racehorses that run in TX (TB, QH, Arabian and Paint). LOPE does not take in geriatric horses, short yearlings, weanlings or retired broodmares at this time.
No. LOPE only takes in racehorses still actively involved in the racing industry.
No. LOPE only takes in horses voluntarily donated by their racing owners.
LOPE has an adoption approval application that prospective adopters complete. Once approved, we like to have the prospective adopter come visit and ride the horse (to make sure it is a good match). If it is, the adopter would pay the adoption fee and sign the adoption contract.
Yes. Our adoption contract is a bill of sale contract. The LOPE adoption contract has some restrictions such as the horse can’t be raced again or sold at auction – but the adopter does own the horse per the contract stipulations.
Our adoption ranch is a working horse farm. We schedule visits by appointment only.
We are a 501 (c )(3) charity and are supported entirely by donations from the public. You can contribute by making a general donation, sponsoring a specific LOPE horse, ordering a LOPE Horsemanship DVD or purchasing our director’s book about the LOPE horses. Please see our Support page for full details. If you would like to make a donation of equipment, hay, feed, tack or barn supplies, please contact us. We appreciate everyone’s help very much!
Because we work with racehorses coming off the track, we prefer to have our experienced staff ride and handle the horses initially. LOPE usually needs regular volunteer help with events, trailering, fundraising and networking – if you would like to volunteer your time in these areas, please contact us.
